In 2016, MTN partnered with Kenya’s Safaricom to power cross-border regional Mobile money transfers. So MTN Uganda mobile users can send money to Safaricom’s M-Pesa customers and vice versa. The recipient receives money in the native countries currency. MTN says they use the Official current Bank of Uganda (BOU) exchange rate. So you want to check with BOU website before you embark on sending funds. MTN and Safaricom both command the largest market share of Mobile money users in Uganda and Kenya respectively. What are the sending charges
MTN Uganda does not have a tariff guide for sending money to Kenya and Rwanda. However, when I tweeted them, MTN says they charge a base fee of Ugx 5,000 plus 2.5% of the amount you are sending. MTN has dropped the percentage transaction charge from 5% when it launched about two years ago to %2.5%. — MTN Uganda (@mtnug) February 6, 2018
